This course is for learners who have finished the Intermediate course and want to refine their Chinese so they can put together their own opinions on a wide range of topics and discuss them with others. You'll work not only on accuracy but also on natural vocabulary and idiomatic expressions that fit the situation.

Each lesson is titled after a chengyu or proverb, such as “有志者事竟成”, “入乡问俗”, and “开卷有益”. After a warm-up, you read a longer text, check its content, vocabulary, and sentence patterns, and talk about your own goals and ideas in Chinese.
Learn idiomatic expressions through situations汉语口语习惯用语教程 · 20 lessons
Each lesson is titled with a sentence containing an idiomatic expression, such as “你可真是个马大哈” and “谁都猜不出他葫芦里卖的什么药”. Situations include exams, shopping, transportation, work, parenting, meals, and health.

We use three books: 高级汉语口语 1 (3rd edition), 高级汉语口语 2 (3rd edition), and 高级汉语口语 提高篇 (3rd edition). Book 1 covers daily life and culture, such as gifts, marriage, food, and dialects; Book 2 covers daily life and society, such as job hunting, family, money, studying abroad, and advertising; and the 提高篇 volume features texts titled after chengyu and proverbs.

The three books contain 36 lessons in total. In 高级汉语口语 1 and 2, the story unfolds through script-like dialogues centered on a Chinese family. Each lesson consists of a warm-up topic, the dialogue text, new words and notes, and exercises (questions on the text's expressions and content, word practice, sentence-pattern drills, and discussion topics). In 提高篇, you start with “Think about it,” read a longer text, and move on to content questions, choosing between similar words, sentence patterns, and language practice.
Expression textbook汉语口语习惯用语教程 / Beijing Language and Culture University Press
It has 20 lessons, and the title of each lesson itself uses an idiomatic expression. Through situations such as exams, shopping, transportation, work, parenting, meals, and health, you learn idiomatic expressions used in conversation.

- Choose idioms and chengyu that fit the context and use natural spoken expressions that aren't too stiff
HSK Levels 5–6 / Chuken (Japan's Chinese Proficiency Test) Level 2 are learning benchmarks focused on speaking ability. Taking this course alone does not guarantee passing either exam. Please practice exam-specific skills, such as HSK reading and writing or Chuken reading, writing, and translation, separately with dedicated materials or prep courses.

How lessons workLESSON STYLE
Lessons are 25-minute one-on-one sessions with a Chinese tutor. Following the structure of a lesson in your textbook, you move from understanding the text to vocabulary and sentence-pattern practice, then on to discussion and language practice.
- In 高级汉语口语 1 and 2, you talk about the warm-up topic, then read the dialogue text and go over key expressions and content questions
- Next, you work on fill-in-the-blank and word-choice exercises and sentence-pattern drills, and finally discuss the lesson's theme
- In 提高篇, you go through “Think about it,” a longer text, content questions, choosing between similar words, and sentence patterns, and finally talk about your own goals and ideas
FAQFAQ
What level of Chinese do I need to start?
The course is mainly for those who have finished the Intermediate course, are at around HSK Level 5, or have studied Chinese for 2–3 years or more. However, it isn't decided by years of study alone. In a free trial lesson, you can check with a tutor whether the textbook's difficulty and the pace of conversation suit your current level.
Will I pass HSK Level 6 if I complete the course?
HSK Levels 5–6 is a benchmark for speaking ability and does not guarantee a pass. The HSK also requires practice with the exam format, including reading and writing. If you're aiming to take the exam, please combine the HSK Prep Course with your Advanced lessons while building your overall language skills.
Will it also help me prepare for Chuken Level 2?
It's useful for building vocabulary, grammar, listening, and conversational expressions, but the Chuken has its own question types, such as reading, writing, and translation. Please study separately with past papers and exam prep materials, and use the Advanced lessons as a place to polish Chinese you can actually use.
Do I need to buy all three textbooks?
You don't use all three books at once from the start; you proceed according to the textbook and lessons you choose. Please talk with your tutor about your current learning situation and goals to decide which book to start with and when to buy it.
