Setting Up Your WeChat ID and Registering It with NetChai
To take lessons via WeChat, your tutor needs to be able to add you as a friend. To make that possible, please check the following three things.
1. Check whether your WeChat ID is still the default ID starting with "wxid"
2. Check whether your settings allow people to find you by WeChat ID
3. Check whether you've registered your WeChat ID in your NetChai member registration info
Unless all three of these are in place, your tutor won't be able to find you and the lesson can't begin. We'll explain each one in order.
★ The most reliable method is registering your "WeChat QR Code." Once registered, you and your tutor can almost reliably add each other as friends regardless of the settings above. See "Register Your WeChat QR Code" below.
What Is a WeChat ID?
A WeChat ID is an alphanumeric ID assigned to each WeChat user. It lets people find and add each other as friends by searching for this ID, without sharing phone numbers.
At NetChai, your tutor looks up your WeChat ID, sends a friend request, and holds the lesson as a video call.
* When you register, a WeChat ID starting with "wxid" is automatically assigned. Because this initial ID often can't be found by others in a search, you'll need to change it to an ID of your choosing.
Register Your WeChat QR Code (recommended, most reliable)
Using your WeChat QR code, you can be added as a friend almost reliably just by scanning, regardless of your search permission settings or even if your WeChat ID is still "wxid." On NetChai, both students and tutors can register their own QR codes, which are then shown to each other in the lesson booking information.
1. First, save your WeChat QR code as an image. In WeChat, go to "Me" → your name at the top → "My QR Code," then tap "…" in the top right and select "Save Image."
2. Log in to the NetChai website, open "Member Registration Info" in the left menu, and upload and save the image you saved in the "WeChat QR Code" field.
3. Once registered, your QR code will appear in your tutor's booking information, allowing the tutor to scan it and send you a friend request.
4. Your tutor's QR code is also shown in the lesson information under member menu "Lessons" > "Booking List Recent History." You can scan it via WeChat's "+" → "Scan," or save the QR code image and read it from your album via the top right of the "Scan" screen, to add your tutor as a friend yourself.
* If you register your QR code, changing your WeChat ID (from wxid) and adjusting the search permission setting below are not required.
Check Your WeChat ID
1. Launch WeChat and tap the "Me" icon at the bottom right of the screen.
2. Below your name at the top, you'll see "WeChat ID:". The alphanumeric text to the right of it is your WeChat ID.
3. If this starts with "wxid," proceed to "Change your WeChat ID" below. If it's already an ID you set yourself, skip ahead to "Make yourself searchable by tutors."
Change Your WeChat ID (required if it starts with "wxid")
The initial WeChat ID starting with "wxid" often can't be found by others in a search. Please change it to an ID of your choosing so your tutor can add you as a friend.
1. Launch WeChat and tap the "Me" icon at the bottom right of the screen.
2. Tap your name at the top to open the profile screen.
3. Tap "WeChat ID" in your profile.
4. Use "Change WeChat ID" to change it to an alphanumeric ID of your choice.
* You can only change your WeChat ID once. Please choose an ID that isn't used by anyone else and is easy for you to remember. It must be 6 to 20 alphanumeric characters starting with a half-width letter (only "-" and "_" are allowed as symbols).
* After changing it, be sure to also update your NetChai member registration info with your new WeChat ID.
* If you've registered your "WeChat QR Code," you can be added as a friend via the QR code even if your ID is still wxid, so changing your ID is not required.
Set Yourself to Be Searchable by Your Tutor
WeChat has a setting that restricts who can find you in searches. If this setting has search by WeChat ID turned off, your tutor won't be able to find you. Follow the steps below to turn it on.
1. Open WeChat's "Settings." (Tap "Me," then "Settings.")
2. Tap "Friend Permissions."
3. Tap "Friend Confirmation Methods."
4. Turn on (green) "WeChat ID" under "Find Me by."
* Depending on your version, the exact labels (such as "Privacy" → "How People Can Find Me") may differ slightly. Turn on the option that allows you to be found by "WeChat ID."
Register Your WeChat ID with NetChai
Finally, register your confirmed WeChat ID in your NetChai member information. If it isn't registered here, your tutor won't be able to see your WeChat ID.
1. Log in to the NetChai website.
2. Open "Member Registration Info" from the menu on the left.
3. Enter your WeChat ID in the "WeChat ID" field and save it.
* Please enter your WeChat ID using half-width alphanumeric characters. Make sure there are no spaces before or after it.
* Whenever you change your WeChat ID, please update this registration as well.
Also, in case you can't add each other as friends before the lesson start time, your tutor is also logged in to NetChai Meeting. You can enter using the "Enter NetChai Meeting" button in the member menu under "Lessons" > "Booking List Recent History" and take the lesson there instead.
